One person, who refused to be identified as the plans are private, stated that Foxconn International Holdings Ltd, the Chinese mobile- phone manufacturer, is working with Amazon on the gadget.
Other person with knowledge about the matter said that Amazon is looking for set off the Smartphone strategy by purchasing patents that cover wireless technology and would assist it guard against claims of violation.
A Smartphone would offer Amazon a broad range of low-priced hardware gadgets that bolster its strategy of making money from digital books, songs and movies.
