Softbank Corp. is close to a deal to acquire a 70% stake in Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) for $20 billion, as Japan’s No 3 phone operator looking for expansion overseas amid a sluggish local market.
Three persons with knowledge about the issue, who refused to be identifies as the negotiations are private, stated that Softbank was in talks to acquire around $12 billion of existing Sprint stock at a premium and $8 billion in newly issued shares.
Bloomberg compiled data confirms that the agreement would be the major publicly reported outbound purchase by a Japanese corporation since around 2000 at $20 billion.
The Nikkei reported that Softbank may unveil the agreement as early as this afternoon in Japan.
