Equivalent Experience
Description:
The Assistant Controller plays an important role in the organization by performing a number of activities related to the company’s Accounting/Finance functions. The position will primarily be responsible, under moderate to intermittent supervision, for assisting the Controller in overseeing general company Accounting. The Assistant Controller helps ensure internal controls are adhered to and accurate and timely financial statements are completed.
Essential Functions
Support the month-end close process, helping the Controller issue timely, accurate, and complete financial statements.
Provide accounting variance analysis and reporting as necessary.
Assist in the management of the annual financial statement audit and quarterly review process. Also assist in any state audits and other regulatory audits. Help ensure timely resolution of identified audit issues.
Prepare high level company journal entries, including performing necessary controls.
Act as liaison for tax payments with third party tax manager, and help ensure all taxes – federal, state B&O, new states, are processed and paid properly.
Ensure accounting policies and procedures are up to date and adhered to, including being in SOX Compliance; provide recommendations for constructive changes and updates to policies, practices, and procedures.
Ensure adherence to service levels for corporate-related accounting questions.
Help manage all accounting functions to appropriate regulatory bodies – IRS, Dodd-Frank, SOX, GAAP, and all state legislature related to compliance.
Assistance in the maintenance of the chart of accounts and system of controls over accounting transactions.
Provide information for accounting related questions throughout the company as needed.
Recommend changes aimed at creating accounting-related efficiencies when possible.
Oversee the corporate staff accountants and review their monthly journal entries for accuracy and completeness. Ensure functions are being done in SOX compliance.
Stay abreast of changes and updates related to field of expertise.
Perform other duties as necessary.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Must have: BS in Accounting/Finance, Management Experience
Nice to Have: Corporate Accounting Experience, CPA license, Mortgage experience, SOX experience.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting of Finance, along with at least four years of progressively responsible experience in Accounting-related role(s), with at least two of those years spent in public accounting or audit positions.
Active CPA license.
Prior experience working in mid-to-large sized organization(s).
Prior experience in mortgage banking or financial services strongly preferred.
Strong accounting and internal controls experience; SOX compliance preferred.
Prior experience using management or accounting information systems.
Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables and vlookups.
Ability to combine an attention to detail with a “big picture” outlook to consistently balance the needs of both.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated patience and professionalism when interacting with both internal and external stakeholders.
Capable of thriving and leading in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Time management, organizational, analytical, and multi-tasking skills required, with the ability to manage tight deadlines.
Excellent research and problem-solving skills and ability to resolve problems and direct a team towards resolution.
