General Summary:
This position is responsible for the development, implementation and management of a variety of financial services supporting the Benefits Organization, including some, but not all of the following: Benefit overpayment calculation, communication and collection and recovery for both open and closed LTD and STD claims as well as Life and LTC, tax related reporting, withholding and remittance of FICA tax, federal and state income taxes and other financial benefit calculation support.

This role may also manage the external vendor’s relationship and process supporting these services. The incumbent contributes to Unum’s business and financial objectives, ensuring a central and consistent application of processes, high quality services that support all service standards with consistency across all sites.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Ensure thorough, fair, and objective financial analysis and support, the highest level of quality service to our customers, and assistance to our claimants in the course of handling financial aspects of the claim, including some of the following, but not limited to; the recovery of overpayments and monitoring and collecting offsets, calculations, tax reporting for federal and state requirements, W-2’s, 1099’s, in-depth analysis and review of existing claims.
May manage vendor relationships implementing new strategies and guidelines to ensure optimal utilization, resulting in maximum results.
Identify and report on service issues and new trends. Provide strong solutions to customers as well as providing subject matter expertise. Ensure consistency in the management and handling of primary work function across the organization through daily consulting, follow-up and ongoing guidance.
Develop/analyze appropriate financial internal controls, complete milestone signoffs per protocols, perform quality reviews/policy audits, ensure applicable laws and regulations are incorporated, and documentation, practices and procedures align with corporate audit standards and to ensure financial integrity.
Implement strategies for more cost-effective processes that reduce overall expenses and are consistent with corporate philosophy.
Develop and maintain workflow and training materials and provide training to Benefits, Underwriting, Sales, Products and other organizations as needed.
Actively participate in customer interaction and enhancing service delivery as appropriate, including on new sales and renewals as needed.
May be responsible for Operations Tax Call Center as well as reporting on the hotline trends, qualitative information, etc.
Work with Management and IT as needed to ensure systems are accurately working as needed due to changes in applicable laws and regulations and/or financial calculations.
Responsible for the selection, retention, performance management, and development of a professional, experienced financial services team capable of meeting current and emerging needs in a high change environment, while increasing the skill level within the organization and consistently meeting business objectives with minimal disruption. This may include the selection of temporary employees during the tax reporting season.
Manage department budget in partnership with direct manager and provide technical and back-up support to manager as needed.
Drive continuous improvement in development and implementation of changes to financial processes and related system enhancements while maintaining the highest possible claim management effectiveness in a dynamic environment.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications
BA/BS required, preferred to be in Accounting or Finance
CPA, or similar certification highly preferred
5+ years of disability management, payroll tax accounting and/or financial experience.
Proven success managing, motivating and leading a team to achieve results, including demonstrated strength in conflict and performance management in a rapidly changing, demanding environment
Proven ability to build strong partnerships and achieve business goals
Results oriented and willingness to assume a high level of accountability managing, multiple, competing priorities
Strong analytical skills with attention to detail
Broad technical knowledge of all legacy claims systems and administrative systems
In-depth technical knowledge of Unum’s disability contracts and policies and demonstrated solid knowledge of offsets.
Demonstrated understanding of risk management and superior negotiation skills
Ability to work as a leader within a management team to ensure the effective coordination and collaboration toward overall department goals
Ability to translate strategic plans into tactical actions
Ability to identify and implement changes that contribute to overall departmental expectations
Ability to inspire a shared vision and provide the necessary direction to achieve it
Strong customer orientation and focus/desire to provide excellence in customer service is critical
Ability to establish and manage an operational budget
