SUMMARY:
The Personal Lines Underwriter is a key individual whose focus is customer service and building relationships with our Agents through telephone interactions and written communications. Primary duties include a balanced responsibility for underwriting new business and renewal policies, endorsements and helping to maintain a profitable in-force book of business based on Underwriting Guidelines. The position requires strong communication, time management and decision-making skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reviews insurance applications and endorsements to evaluate submissions information required to accept or reject new policies based on underwriting guidelines.
Assesses risk quality for in-force book of business through renewal review process to ensure compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
Research and follow through with requests for missing information from agency partners.
Communicates daily with agents via telephone, internal diary and email to assist in risk placement and rating, to obtain information and answer agent inquiries.
Maintains a high level of customer service.
Communicates with field reps and other insurance or inspection companies to obtain information, answer inquiries, or explain company underwriting policies.
Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers / coworkers including, Actuary, Marketing, IT and Claims in order to attract and retain profitable business.
Interprets and explains products and services.
Travel periodically to assigned field.
Ability to use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
Provide guidance and assistance to other team members.
Additional duties as assigned.

REQUISITE SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
Strong organizational, time management and analytical skills are essential, along with the ability to handle priorities in a fast-paced work environment along with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to make independent and cognizant decisions.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to build and leverage excellent customer relationships.
Must be highly customer service oriented being able to communicate effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
High-level of motivation with willingness to take on challenges, and focus on personal responsibility.
Must have hands-on experience with various computer systems including but not limited to rating systems, MS Word and Excel, Outlook.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE :
Underwriter I – Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and 1 year or less industry experience; or 1 – 2 years industry experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Underwriter II – Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and 2 years or less industry experience; or 2 – 4 years industry experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Underwriter III – Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and 3 years or less industry experience; or 4 plus years industry experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The ability to gather and disseminate information to and from other departments is a critical element of this position. Qualified candidates must be able to display exceptional communication skills with respect to gathering, organizing, and communicating information to other departments including management.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from various departments and managers.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS :
Insurance designations are desirable.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of internet/intranet software and the MS Office products including Word, Excel, and Access. Must have knowledge of computer equipment.
