Some specifics about the job
The Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer and will support the organization’s accounting and finance activities. The Controller is a hands-on accounting role, handling or supervising all daily accounting and finance responsibilities. This position requires the ability to work independently and autonomously on a wide range of financial duties including accounting, reporting, analyses, GAAP, payroll, and internal policies and procedures in order to provide accurate and timely financial statements and reports. The Controller has supervisory responsibilities over three accounting staff members and has oversight of outsourced accounting services.
The primary functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Manage accounting operations and activities of all entities ensuring compliance with professional accounting practices and governmental regulations
Supervise accounting, accounts payable, and payroll staff
Ensure the appropriate classification of exchange transactions, contributions, and accounts payable are recorded properly
Manage and track workpapers for balance sheet and income statement accounts
Manage the month-end close for parent and subsidiary organizations
Manage internal and external requests for accounting data, accounting reports and analyses
Maintain internal accounting control frameworks and work to maximize efficiency across the organization
Ensure AFF policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met
Develop and initiate systems, policies, and procedures for transacting accounting matters, regulatory compliance and mandates including finance-related forms, informational listings, how-to guides, etc.
Support the annual external audit of the financial statements and internal controls based on agreed upon procedures
Manage and provide subject matter expertise on all AFF accounting and finance related systems including Solomon, Concur and AMEX integrations.
Provide training and support to all AFF finance and non-finance staff on AFF systems, policies and procedures.

Qualifications and experience that will help you succeed.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance; CPA is required
10 years relevant experience and at least 5 years of managerial/supervisory experience performing Controller functions, ideally in complex nonprofit organizations
Hands on experience with general ledger, monthly closing procedures, monthly issuance of financial statements, variance and analytical reports
Expert in GAAP accounting
Experience with intracompany transactions, revenue recognition procedures, and multiple sources of funding
Experience in audit and government reporting (single audit)
Experience with Microsoft Dynamics SL (Solomon) accounting software and Concur
