Job Description
Job Summary
A leader on the Controller’s office management team supporting all fiscal operations and accounting functions of Smith. This includes accounts payable, accounts receivable & billing, college cashier, operational transactions, and internal and external reporting. This position supports the general accounting processes, financial close, audit, tax and compliance filings. Supervise current operations and advance improvements for a better user experience, accuracy and access to information, and financial efficiency. Supervise team members, serve as a mentor for policies and processes, and as a resource to the Smith community.

Essential Functions
Financial Operations Management (60%)
In partnership with the Controller, provide leadership for Smith’s financial operation. Supervise accounts payable function ensuring appropriate controls and coding, optimizing the timing of payments. Serve as the Workday Expense lead and primary architect for its configuration including expense reimbursement and inventory processes. Manage compliance including 1099, 1042s, and unclaimed filings. Supervise accounts receivable. Standardize processes across the Workday platform and related systems to support the centralization and optimization of billing and collection practices. Manage the college cashier and the application of cash payments. Supervise all operational processes including transactions for internal charges, allocations, adjusting entries and accounting adjustments. Review and post monthly and quarterly entries for GAAP and budget presentations. Lead improvement initiatives to leverage new technology and create efficiencies in process. Evaluate and document processes and internal control.
Partner in all areas of accounting and processes including: investments, gifts and grants, payroll, student loans, internal allocations, budget and capital reporting, and other accounting functions. Manage staff, evaluate performance; set goals, priorities and standards. Enforce, assess and enhance policies related to the financial operations of the College. Collaborate regularly with other campus offices including student financial services, budget, information technology, human resources, development and others.
General Accounting & Reporting (30%)
Partner in the supervision of monthly and quarterly closing processes. Analyze, interpret, approve, and compile financial data. Perform analysis of postings for appropriate coding and worktag configurations. Partner in the preparation and issuance of the GAAP financial statements, compliance filings, and the annual and uniform guidance audits. Produce interim financial statements and related financial reports for review with senior management. Prepare supporting schedules including planning, directing and coordinating the activities of several departments. Evaluate the use of restricted funds and post releases from restriction. Collaborate with Finance team in operating and capital budget changes and reconciliations. Provide leadership on Smith policy and complex not-for-profit accounting processes. Serve as a resource for the Smith community providing guidance and exemplary customer service.
Compliance & Policy Administration (5%)
Responsible for ensuring the college remains current with compliance, accounting and regulatory changes. Design college-wide policies related to the financial operations of the College. Interpret and provide guidance to members of the community on current financial policies. Lead business process changes to better utilize and integrate technology.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)
Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Supervisory experience required.
Experience working with diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA designation or advanced degree preferred. A demonstrated progression of responsibilities and experience in not-for-profit accounting. Higher education, system implementation, Workday experience preferred.
Skills
Strong technical accounting skills and knowledge of accounting standards. Excellent customer service, leadership and management skills. Experience working with complex ERP system. Willingness to embrace and lead change and improvement. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; strong attention to detail and accuracy; strong quantitative skills; good judgment, discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to interact with diverse constituencies; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to lead a team and work independently; competent project management skills: strong computer skills, advanced MS Excel and proficiency with relational database technology.
