About the role
This role analyzes and evaluates risk and accepts, rejects, or modifies risk and coverage conditions within limits of delegated authority and in accordance with established underwriting guidelines to achieve underwriting profitability objectives. The underwriter will be responsible for Guaranteed Cost business in the Middle Market Energy Division. Specific acumen in Energy Casualty risks is beneficial, though not a prerequisite.
Under limited direction, underwrites complex standard and non-standard products, new and renewals. Determines how pricing should be modified based on loss experience and is able to evaluate complex exposures.
The role will be responsible for underwriting the Workers’ Compensation, General Liability and Auto Liability primary Casualty product lines.
Communicate risk appetite and NA Casualty Value Proposition to brokers.
Evaluates risk and gives approval or declination for quotes.
Reviews new distribution opportunities, identifies new business relationships, manages pipeline of opportunities and collaborates with region to ensure new opportunities are explored and pursued.
Ensures proper underwriting and rating of renewal business through actual case preparation and monitoring of Underwriters and Associate Underwriters.
Reviews the more difficult accounts and ensures that they are issued accurately and in a timely fashion. Rapidly evaluates, prioritizes and selects submissions to be underwritten.
Has the knowledge and ability to explain the rationale behind the underwriting decisions made on an account.
Generates new business and provides underwriting guidance and appropriate rates for alternate plans at time of renewal.
Makes independent sales calls to market and cross-market products. Identifies target markets, designs, and implements strategies for lead development and builds prospect lists.
Identifies cross-selling opportunities. Collaborate with Distribution, Territory Managers, and other line(s) of business underwriters to target desirable accounts and cross selling opportunities from brokers.
Travels to broker/client meetings to serve as the NA Casualty product expert and to identify cross selling opportunities.
Perform special requests for clients, which may include task such as business plan changes, or analyzing new agreements.
May direct or conduct internal underwriting audits.
Refers declined business to other AIG divisions, as appropriate.
TECHNICAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 5 years of Commercial Insurance Company, Agency or Brokerage experience.
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
Proven ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships.
Working knowledge of US Casualty lines of business (Workers’ Compensation, Auto Liability, and General Liability) including product features, forms, regulatory environments and risks etc.
Demonstrated sales, marketing, and relationship building experience.
Very strong verbal and written communication skills.
Highly motivated and results-oriented.
Ability to work in dynamic, rapidly changing environment, adapting to changing requirements and collaborating with a wide range of colleagues to quickly deliver solutions.
Willingness to be flexible, learn on the job, and maintain a can-do attitude.
Expertise with analytical tools and technology.
